EWTN TV Global Catholic Network. Religious Tv Station. Stream 1 Is Spanish. Stream 2 Is English. The Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) is an American cable television network which presents Catholic-themed programming. It was founded by Mother Mary Angelica of the Annunciation (born Rita Antoinette Rizzo) in 1980 on the grounds of the Our Lady of the Angels monastery in Irondale, Alabama, a suburb of Birmingham. EWTN began broadcasting in August 1981 from a garage on the monastery property. Initially, only four hours of programming was broadcast. Additional sectarian programming was gradually added over the next seven years while secular programming was phased out. In 1987, EWTN began broadcasting twenty-four hours per day. The network launched shortwave radio station WEWN in 1992, and broadcasts on Sirius Satellite Radio on channel 160. Regular programming includes a daily Mass, a daily praying of the rosary, The Journey Home, Life on the Rock, Sunday Night Live with Fr. Benedict Groeschel, EWTN Live, and The World Over Live. Episodes of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen's Life is Worth Living, educational shows dedicated to the Bible, the history and theology of the Roman Catholic Church, and children's programming are also presented. Additionally, EWTN has added Spanish language television and radio broadcasts. Special programming such as coverage of the of popes, papal conclaves, elections, and visits, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses, coverage of World Youth Day, and the installation of bishops, archbishops and cardinals is also presented. Mother Angelica herself hosted her own show, Mother Angelica Live. However, a series of health problems forced her to give up the show; repeats air as Mother Angelica Live Classics. Additionally, a dispute led to the Holy See sending an Apostolic Visitor to EWTN. Ultimately, this led to Mother Angelica turning EWTN over to a board of lay people, which effectively prevented a likely takeover. While EWTN has trustees, it does not have shareholders or owners; its operations are funded entirely by viewer donations. Traditionally, the plea for donations is: "Remember to keep us between your gas and electric bill". Currently aged 87, Mother Angelica lives at the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament monastery in Hanceville, Alabama, which opened in 1996. EWTN is a member of the World Catholic Association for Communication. In 1992, EWTN established the largest privately owned shortwave radio station, WEWN, in the Birmingham area. The EWTN news department produces a daily news service for the television and radio networks, featuring news sources including Vatican Radio. They also produce The World Over Live, which covers relevant current events. A partial listing of EWTN programs:
